PETS AND RABIES PREVENTION
Within the past week there has been an incident where a racoon was discovered in an enclosed dog yard in a populated area of the Fitzwilliam Village. The racoon was noted to be ill and became aggressive towards the human and the dog. As the dog was unwittingly let out. There was no known animal contact because the owner fended off the wild animal with a shovel, the dog was then immediately seen by their veterinarian and per public health protocol was given an updated rabies vaccine and is now (per protocol) quarantined at home for 45 days. The racoon was sent to Concord and tested (per protocol) for rabies. We were notified yesterday by New Hampshire Public Health that the test was positive for rabies
This notice is to advise Fitzwilliam pet owners not to allow your dogs to be off leads during walks, not to allow cats or dogs to be out of doors without a human, and do not allow pet or children to approach wandering domestic or wild animals. If you notice strange or sick appearing behavior in wild or unaccompanied domestic animal notify Fitzwilliam Fire (animal control officer) or Fitzwilliam Police Department to investigate. Please be sure your pets have up to date rabies vaccinations.
Thank you,
C. A. Rocheleau, Deputy Health Officer, Town of Fitzwilliam
